Mercury

Mercury in Vedic astrology — the karaka of intelligence, communication, and skill; ruler of Mithuna (Gemini) and Kanya (Virgo).

Budha is the Sanskrit name for Mercury.

Karaka (significator) of: intelligence and analytical ability, speech and communication, writing and commerce, skill and craftsmanship, discrimination and discernment, mathematics, and younger siblings.

Rules two lagnas: Mithuna (Gemini) — the more outward, communicative, and versatile expression; and Kanya (Virgo) — Mercury's mooltrikona, the more analytical, precise, and service-oriented expression.

Exalted in Kanya (Virgo) at 15°. Debilitated in Meena (Pisces) at 15°.

Mercury is a neutral planet in classical texts — it takes on the quality of the planets it associates with. In company with benefics it functions well; with malefics it tends toward the sharp or calculating end of its significations. Mercury's house placement and sign tell you how and where analytical and communicative energy is directed.

Used on SahiKundli for: Mercury's placement in houses and signs, ruling planet for Mithuna and Kanya lagnas, and as a key indicator in career and communication readings.
