Suryaसूर्य

Sun

The Sun in Vedic astrology — the karaka of soul, self, authority, and vitality; ruler of Simha (Leo).

Surya is the Sanskrit name for the Sun. Also called Ravi, Aditya, and Bhanu.

Karaka (significator) of: the soul and individual identity, father, authority figures, government and institutions, career and public reputation, vitality and physical constitution, and the spine.

Rules one lagna: Simha (Leo) — the Sun's own sign, associated with dignity, leadership, and creative self-expression.

Exalted in Mesha (Aries) at 10°. Debilitated in Tula (Libra) at 10°.

Classical interpretation (BPHS Ch. 3; Saravali Ch. 3): a well-placed Sun is associated with confidence, leadership capacity, and a clear sense of self. Affliction or debilitation is associated with difficulties with authority, ego conflicts, and tension with father figures. The Sun's house placement tells you which domain of life carries the most direct expression of will and identity.

Used on SahiKundli for: Sun's placement in houses and signs, ruling planet for Simha lagna, and as Atmakaraka candidate in Jaimini readings.
