Mars
Mars in Vedic astrology — the karaka of courage, action, and conflict; ruler of Mesha (Aries) and Vrischika (Scorpio) lagnas.
Mangala is the Sanskrit name for Mars in Vedic astrology. The planet is also referred to as Kuja, Bhauma, and Angaraka.
Karaka (significator) of: courage, decisive action, physical energy and stamina, conflict and competition, brothers and siblings, real estate and land, surgical or martial professions, and accidents or injuries when afflicted.
Rules two lagnas:
- Mesha (Aries) — Mars's mooltrikona and own sign, the more outwardly martial expression
- Vrischika (Scorpio) — Mars's own sign, the more inward, strategic, and persevering expression
Classical interpretation (BPHS Ch. 3; Saravali Ch. 4): Mars represents the principle of will and force in action. A well-placed Mars is associated with courage, physical capability, decisiveness, and a capacity to push through resistance. A poorly placed or afflicted Mars is associated with anger, impulsivity, accidents, conflict, and difficulties in relationships — the latter codified as Mangal Dosha when Mars sits in specific houses from the lagna, Moon, or Venus.
Note on remedies
Classical Jyotish sometimes recommends red coral (Moonga) for strengthening Mars under specific chart conditions. SahiKundli does not sell gemstones and earns no commission from any vendor. For our position on classical remedies — what they are, when they're traditionally indicated, and what authentic stones actually cost — see Gemstone guidance.
Used on SahiKundli for: Mars's placement in houses and signs, ruling planet for Mesha and Vrischika lagnas, and Mangal Dosha analysis on the chart's Doshas panel.
