Fixed Modality

One of three svabhavas (modalities) in Vedic astrology, applied to four signs — Vrishabha, Simha, Vrischika, Kumbha — denoting stability, depth, and resistance to change.

Sthira means "fixed" or "immovable." It is one of the three svabhavas (modalities) into which the twelve zodiac signs are divided in Vedic astrology. The other two are Chara (movable) and Dvisvabhava (dual or mutable).

The four Sthira signs are:

  • Vrishabha (Taurus) — ruled by Shukra (Venus)
  • Simha (Leo) — ruled by Surya (Sun)
  • Vrischika (Scorpio) — ruled by Mangala (Mars)
  • Kumbha (Aquarius) — ruled by Shani (Saturn)

Classical interpretation associates Sthira signs with steadiness, depth, persistence, and resistance to external pressure. Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra establishes the threefold modality classification in Chapter 3; Saravali applies it through Chapter 48 in its sign-by-sign interpretations.

The Sthira classification is categorical, not gradational: a sign is fixed or it isn't. SahiKundli does not assign a "fixedness score." If your lagna is Sthira, the relevant question is how that disposition interacts with your planetary placements, not how much of it you have.

Used on SahiKundli for: classifying your lagna's modality on the interpretation card, and informing readings about persistence, adaptability, and rate of life-change.
