Term
Vrischikaवृश्चिक
Scorpio Lagna
Scorpio rising. Ruled by Mangala, water element, fixed modality. Classically associated with depth, secrecy, stamina, and strategic operation.
Vrischika, or Scorpio, is the eighth sign of the zodiac and the second sign ruled by Mangala (Mars). When Vrischika rises on the eastern horizon at birth, it forms the chart's Lagna.
Classical signature (BPHS Ch. 4; Saravali Ch. 48): Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra describes Vrischika as a centipede residing in crevices — symbolizing hidden depths, defensive armor, and a capacity to operate from cover. Saravali characterizes the native as intensely private, possessing formidable stamina, and capable of both severity and profound regeneration. Classical Jyotisha texts emphasize concealment, endurance, and strategic operation more than emotional display.
Structural attributes:
- Ruler: Mangala (Mars) — the more inward, persevering expression of Mars (compared to Mesha, the outwardly martial expression)
- Tattva (element): Jala (water) — emotional depth, intuition, capacity to hold rather than dissipate
- Svabhava (modality): Sthira (fixed) — steadiness, resistance to change, depth over breadth
The combination of Sthira (fixed) and Jala (water) is what distinguishes Vrischika from the other two water signs: where Karka (Cancer) is movable water and Meena (Pisces) is dual water, Vrischika is the water that does not move — it holds, intensifies, and transforms under pressure.
